Celebrate the golden age of the Disaster Film as Esquire Rewind takes a look at some of the films that gave the genre a name. Whether it be on the earth, in the air, amidst fire or in the middle of the ocean. Our list of selected films were nominated for over thirty Academy Awards, many for outstanding special effects...and this was before any CGI!
We kick it off with the one that started it all...AIRPORT (1970) on Friday, August 15th - a classic blueprint of the genre: a headline emergency story and multiple plotlines acted out by an all-star cast. Airport was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. And, we wrap it up with the spoof of the genre, that ended the decade long trend of disaster films, AIRPLANE! (1980). We've also included the 50th Anniversary showings of JAWS in the schedule, as though not typically a Disaster Film, it is often categorized along with similar "Man versus Nature" disaster films and incorporates several elements of the genre.
